Etchine

an intaglio technique of printmaking. Drawing is made with the use of a needle on a metal, usually copperplate, covered by acid-resistant varnish and subjected to etching with the use of nitric acid (varnish – a mix of wax, asphalt and resin). In order to obtain a higher intensity of line, etching is repeated, by covering with varnish places, which are supposed to be lighter. After the completion of the etching process, varnish is removed, paint is rubbed in the created grooves, and the plate is put through a printing press with moistened paper. Prints resemble drawings in pen and ink.
